GENERAL
In
accordance with NFPA 1500, 1992 chapter 5, section 5-3.9
and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.143 (e)(5)(i), the Pecatonica Fire
Protection District has established a "NO
BEARD" Policy for persons who use SCBA's.
Due to
the variety of hazardous materials that we face today in
not only structural firefighting, but on VEHICLE fires
and HAZMAT incidents, it has become necessary for us to
restrict those persons who have beards from using SCBA's.
This policy is established for your protection
from hazardous atmospheres that may damage your lungs,
cause serious illness, or cause death.
A
growth of beard or facial hair at any point where the
SCBA facepiece is designed to seal with the face,
regardless of the specific fit test measurement that can
be obtained, or hair that could interfere with the
facepiece valve function shall be prohibited for members
required to use SCBA.
